Acid Reflux Foods

Unfortunately, acid reflux is a condition that can prevent you from having all the food that you might be able to think of. The condition is also called gastroesophageal reflux, and when it occurs, the liquid contents of the stomach flow back up the esophagus. People with these reflux issues need to know what the safe for Acid Reflux Foods may be so that they can ward off the painful symptoms of their condition.

 

Common food items that are widely considered quite safe for acid reflux foods include fruits: fresh apples, dried apples, apple juice, and bananas. Apple cider, however, needs to be consumed with discretion by those who get acid reflux. They can also eat dried cranberries in moderation even though cranberry juice is a no-no.

 

Baked potatoes, baked potato chips, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, green beans, and peas are all vegetables in the safe for acid reflux foods category. Note that unlike baked potato chips, regular potato chips as well as french fries are among the foods to be avoided. Low-fat salad dressing is recommended for people with acid reflux, in lieu of creamy salad dressing and salad dressing with oil and vinegar.

 

Grain products like multigrain or white bread, bran or oatmeal cereal, corn bread, graham crackers, pretzels, and brown or white rice fall into the safe for acid reflux foods category. Garlic bread, granola, and muffins may also be allowed with discretion.

 

Fat-free cream cheese and goat cheese are safe dairy products for an acid reflux sufferer to eat. Fat-free sour cream is preferred instead of regular sour cream, while low-fat soy cheese could be an acceptable substitute for cottage cheese, which is not one of the safe for acid reflux foods either.

 

Meats that are not likely to cause heartburn include extra-lean ground beef, London-broil steak, skinless chicken breast, egg substitute, egg whites, and fish with no added fat. Lean ground beef, hot dogs made from beef (or pork), chicken salad, eggs scrambled in butter, fried eggs, and fried fish can also be relatively safe for acid reflux foods if you make sure to consume them in moderate amounts occasionally.

 

Sweets need not be cut out of your diet if you happen to have acid reflux. You can have fat-free cookies, jelly beans, and red licorice. Your main beverage option if you have acid reflux is mineral water, plus occasional and moderate servings of cola, nonalcoholic beer or wine, and root beer.
